“The more you learn, the more you earn.” A phrase widely attributed to Warren Buffett.

For decades, it was true.

It is no longer necessarily true.

In a world changing at unprecedented pace, skills and knowledge become outdated, sometimes irrelevant, faster than you can master them. If you spend your time chasing the next certification, the next area of expertise, you might not just be wasting time. You are paying the opportunity cost of the one mastery that will never become obsolete.

So what is the secret sauce? What is the skill that will serve you in mastering your life, your business, and contributing to positive human progress?

The answer might seem counterintuitive. Because it brings us back to the roots.

When I was seventeen, I started a vocational training as a nurse in a gerontopsychiatric ward, a closed institution for elderly patients, most suffering from dementia. My most crucial task was not medical. It was this: influencing people who were irrational, sometimes frightened, sometimes volatile. Without force. Through pure human connection.

Let me give you one example.

Miss D. was a lady in her seventies. She had had an accident, the kind that comes with age and is deeply embarrassing. She knew it. And because of that embarrassment, she refused any help. Vehemently. She would not let anyone near her. But she was uncomfortable. And I knew that if I pushed, I would only make it worse.

So I sat down next to her. I took a breath. I matched her energy. Met her where she was. We talked. Nothing that made logical sense, but it was never about the words. It was about her feeling that someone was truly listening. That I was not a threat. That I was on her side.

Once I felt that small shift, that moment of openness, I suggested we go freshen up. Maybe put on some lipstick.

She stood up.

And once she stood up, I knew the rest would fall into place.

That skill, reading another person, matching their energy, and guiding them toward an outcome, is the one I have used in every negotiation, every leadership challenge, and every C-suite role I have held since.

It is what some people dismissively call a soft skill.

It is the hardest skill there is.

And it is the one that will never become obsolete. No AI will replace it. No market shift will make it irrelevant. The ability to truly understand another human being and influence them, with care, not force.

And if you want to learn it by doing, consider social services. You will build the skill. And you will make a difference. A true win win.

Dear leader.

Stop wasting your time learning the wrong things.

Double down on your people skills instead!

They will serve you for life.
